Finding the Right Coffee When You Have a Sensitive Stomach

There’s a common misconception that if coffee upsets your stomach, you simply have to stop drinking it altogether. I used to think the same way. Whenever I felt acidity or discomfort after a cup, I assumed coffee just wasn’t meant for me.

Over time, though, I realized it wasn’t coffee itself causing the problem; it was the type of coffee I was choosing.

Learning about different roast levels, brewing methods, and bean origins completely changed my experience. I found that some coffees felt much gentler, especially when I avoided very bright, acidic brews and leaned toward medium to darker roasts or lower-acidity brewing methods like cold brew. Suddenly, I could still enjoy my morning ritual without worrying about how I’d feel afterward.

That curiosity eventually led me to write my guide on coffee types and alternatives for people with acid sensitivity, where I share the options that have personally worked for me and explain why certain coffees are naturally easier on the stomach. It’s the article I wish I had when I first started searching for answers.

At the same time, I also became fascinated by how coffee culture differs around the world. Exploring the story behind Singapore coffee, from traditional kopi to the country’s growing specialty coffee scene, gave me a much deeper appreciation for how different brewing traditions create completely different drinking experiences.

These days, I don’t think about coffee as something that either “works” or “doesn’t work” for me. I simply choose the style that suits my body that day. Sometimes it’s a smooth cold brew, sometimes it’s a comforting latte, and sometimes it’s traditional kopi enjoyed in moderation.

For me, enjoying coffee has never been about forcing myself to drink every cup. It’s about understanding the differences, finding what feels right, and realizing there’s almost always a coffee that fits you, you just have to discover it.
