The underpass from Somerset MRT never really sleeps. There are lanyards, shopping bags and the soft squeak of shoes on polished floor.
Somewhere in the basement of Orchard Gateway, the smell changed. Toasted bread. Condensed milk. That faint, bitter warmth of kopi.
I didn’t plan to stop. I stopped anyway.
A Fun Toast Built on Nanyang Memory
Fun Toast calls itself a coffeehouse with Nanyang heritage. In practice, it brings kopitiam food out of the hawker centre and sets it down in an air-conditioned mall.
It doesn’t try to recreate an old coffeeshop. Unlike my other Cafe Reviews, there’s no fan clacking overhead and no marble tabletop. What it keeps is the menu: traditional coffee, kaya toast, chee cheong fun and curry chicken. These are the local delights many of us grew up with.
Fun Toast Singapore has other outlets nearby, including one near Bedok North Road, expanding its community reach. This Fun Toast review covers only the Orchard Gateway outlet.
First Impressions: Clean, Roomy, Still a Mall
The space felt clean and more spacious than I expected for a basement unit. A large wall guide explains how to order kopi Singapore style: kosong for no sugar, siew dai for less sweet, gao for stronger.
It’s a small kindness for visitors, and a gentle reminder for the rest of us.
Still, this is a shopping-centre coffeehouse. When it’s busy, the chatter rises and foot traffic drifts past. Come for comfort, not silence.
Starting With the Fun Toast Set
Kaya Butter Toast and a Cup of Kopi
The Kaya Butter Toast (S$3.50) is where I’d begin. The edges are crisp, and the cold butter slowly gives way to the sweet kaya, a perfect balance of sweetness and bite.
The listed set pairs it with a regular coffee for S$6.20 – S$6.50. On Orchard Road, that feels almost quietly generous.
Honey Butter French Toast and Ham & Cheese French Toast
If you lean sweet, the Honey Butter French Toast (S$4.70) is soft, golden and simple. The Ham & Cheese French Toast (S$5.30) leans savoury. Both come as two slices of bread.
The Soft Bun I'd Point a Friend Toward
The Min Jiang Kueh Soft Bun (S$3.70) is Fun Toast’s take on the old peanut pancake. A toasted soft bun gets a custard spread and a generous scatter of grated peanuts. It’s nutty, a little nostalgic and easy to like.
The Fun Meal Plates
Curry Chicken with Chee Cheong Fun
This pairing caught me off guard. Curry Chicken with Chee Cheong Fun (S$7.50) swaps rice for slippery rice noodle rolls soaking up the gravy. Customers often describe it as fragrant and generously portioned. The dish is prepared with tender soya sauce chicken, adding a savory depth enhanced by a touch of soy sauce.
More From the Fun Meal Board
BBQ Prawn with Rice (S$8.90): tangy and sweet-savoury, and a favourite among regulars
Mee Siam with Shredded Chicken (S$5.80)
Shredded Chicken Soup (S$6.30), with bee hoon, noodles or macaroni
Lor Mee (S$6.80), and note that the gravy contains shrimp
There are smaller plates too. Siew mai is S$2.80 for two pieces, and plain chee cheong fun is S$3.20.
Prices vary by outlet and set format, but Kaya Butter Toast and toast sets remain among the lower-priced breakfast options.
What I'd Drink
Yuan Yang and Traditional Coffee
The traditional coffee starts at S$1.80. A Yuan Yang (from S$2.10) is coffee and tea folded together, thick and milky. It’s the cup that brings me back to old breakfasts with my family. The specialty tea options here add variety for those who prefer a different kind of brew.
Honey Lime Sour Plum, Honey Lemon Tea and Honey Lime Tea
On a sticky afternoon, the Honey Lime Sour Plum (S$2.70 normal / S$3.60 iced) is sharp and salty-sweet. The honey lemon tea and honey lime tea are gentler, and the plain honey lemon and honey lime cost the same as the sour plum. Fun Toast says all its honey drinks use 100% pure honey.
Honey Tea C and the Choco Peanut Cloud
Honey Tea C, essentially honey milk tea, is soft and comforting. The underrated pick, though, is the iced Choco Peanut Cloud (S$4.50). It’s closer to dessert than a drink, with the natural sweetness of chocolate and peanuts blending smoothly.
Service, Honestly
The feedback here is honest, so I’ll be honest too.
Some customers talk about friendly staff and food served quickly. Others say they waited at the counter without being acknowledged, or received the wrong order with little explanation.
It seems to depend on the day and the crowd. If it’s busy, be patient and check your tray before you sit. Many users leave comments and ratings on Facebook, reflecting a range of experiences.

Yes, on a morning when I need something familiar.
It isn’t a heritage kopitiam, and it doesn’t pretend to be. But a cup of kopi under S$3 and a warm slice of kaya toast, right beneath Orchard Road, still feel a little like home.
The hospitality here, while sometimes variable, adds to the charm of a place that connects old and new life, bridging generations with every bite.
