Are Overpriced Cafés Worth It? Let's Discuss
Singapore’s café scene is a mixed bag. For every gem, there’s a spot where the decor is better than the coffee. With prices going up, we need to ask: is this experience actually worth what I’m paying?
I don’t mind paying more if a café gets the details right. I’m talking about staff who know their stuff, smooth service, and food and drinks that show real passion. When that happens, the price feels fair because you’re paying for the skill and care that goes into it all.
The real issue is with cafés that are all style, no substance. You know the type—great for Instagram, but the food is just okay and the service is slow. When a place spends a fortune on its looks but skimps on the basics, those high prices feel like a scam. Are we just paying for the furniture?
Consistency matters, too. If I’m paying top dollar, I expect the same great quality every time, whether it’s a slow Tuesday or a packed Saturday. If the standards slip, the value just isn’t there.
At the end of the day, we’re the customers, and we can vote with our wallets. It’s time to look beyond the fancy interiors and ask, “Is this truly worth it?” If not, it’s okay to find somewhere else. The problem isn’t high prices—it’s the lack of value behind them.
A pretty café is fine for a photo. But a truly great café? That’s a place you’ll want to visit again and again.
