The Café That Started It All for Me
Every coffee lover remembers the café that pulled them into the world of specialty coffee.
For me, it was % Arabica.
It wasn’t the first café I had ever visited, but it was the first one I truly paid attention to. Before that, coffee was simply coffee. If it tasted good, I drank it. I never thought much about where the beans came from, how they were roasted, or why one cup could feel completely different from another.
% Arabica changed that.
Walking into the café, I was struck by how simple everything felt. There weren’t walls covered in decorations or pages of flashy drinks. The focus was entirely on the coffee, and somehow, that simplicity made me appreciate every cup even more.
It became the first café I reviewed, and looking back now, I realize how fortunate I was that it happened to be % Arabica.
It quietly set the standard for every café that came after.
As I continued exploring Singapore’s café scene, I found myself comparing each visit to that very first experience. Not because I expected every café to look the same, but because % Arabica showed me what thoughtful coffee service could feel like. The attention to detail, the consistency, and the confidence in doing one thing exceptionally well became qualities I started looking for everywhere else.
In many ways, it changed how I reviewed cafés too.
I stopped asking whether a café was popular or beautiful enough for social media. Instead, I started paying attention to how intentional the experience felt. Did the coffee speak for itself? Did the atmosphere match the brand? Would I genuinely want to come back?
Those became the questions that shaped every review I wrote afterward.
When I revisited my % Arabica Singapore review, I realized it wasn’t just another café article. It was the beginning of how I learned to experience cafés more thoughtfully.
There are plenty of wonderful cafés in Singapore, each with its own personality and strengths.
But there will always be something special about the one that teaches you what great coffee can be.
For me, that café will always be % Arabica.
